Spring has sprung! (Showcase #5)

This Showcase was focus on a new take on the theme Spring. The brief was fairly open with a short list of NO-NO’s.

No bunnies.
No chicks.
No eggs.
No baskets.
No bonnets.

I was hoping me and my design friends could find a way to tweak this topic ever so much.

Each designer was able to submit up to 3 designs. I hope you enjoy them.

Top 10 #365patterns

There is an update on my participation in the 365 patterns in 2013.

My participation has been a bit off the beaten path. I started in February and had an amazing run for the first few weeks, I even was making multiple patterns a day. I decided I needed to take this challenge and really run with it in order to be less precious with how I make patterns, to see if maybe I’d find a sense of ease as I design. However I do work away from home for my day job and being away half of the month makes it a bit difficult to create and post a pattern a day in the strictest sense.

Then March came in like a Lion. And I haven’t gotten back on track.

However, I am eager to get on with it! With that in mind I introduce MY top ten designs since starting this project.

#365Patterns First Ten

So early in February my pal Tammie Bennett inquired if a bunch of us (surface pattern pals) were going to join in on the 365 pattern challenge that the ladies over at Caravan had challenged each other. (I’m speaking of Melanie of Fifth & Hazel and Alma of Alma Loveland & Ollibird. Busy ladies in their own right.)

Seemed like a crazy thing to commit to, as making surface patterns hasn’t been a quick process for me thus far, and then being away 15 days a month with no ability to make patterns while on the road…. But what the heck, sign me up! I thought this would be a good prompt to just DO. Keep DOing, and be quick about it. Maybe in 365 days from now I’ll have really found my own unique signature style, AND I’d have a pretty big portfolio growing – daily.

So the first 10 days are included in the slide show above. If you are on instagram you can follow me @mmejacquelene and the whole group of us #365patterns on both twitter & instagram. I’ll post 10 or so patterns every month, keep checking and love notes in the comments below about the direction I’m headed are always welcome!

Also I have finally settled on a logo/watermark for my work, what do you think?

Sending some L-O-V-E (Showcase #4)

For this addition of my bi-monthly Surface Pattern Design Showcases I decided to share a little l-o-v-e.

Valentine’s was the theme that the ladies and I played with – kinda however we wanted. But there were a few rules. At least one of us bent those rules, but her design was so lovely I didn’t have the heart to exclude it. For those of you with a keen eye, you might know which I’m referring to.

I sent out the brief with this photo and the strict colour palette you see below the photo.

I found this image on a blog called Muffins in my Backpack which had three interesting valentine colour palettes in 2012. Marta, (Ms. Muffins) has the source of the original photo linking back to weheartit.com – but I can’t determine who the actual photographer is – if it’s you, or if you know please leave a note in the comments I’ll kindly adjust this post.

The limited colour palette was a bit of a challenge at first, especially since black & white are not a part of the five colours. However, the lightest grey and the darkest grey definitely work as your contrast colours, one just had to work a bit harder to in the words of Tim Gunn, “Make it work!” I hope you enjoyed this showcase, thanks for stopping by. Showcase #5 will be live April 1…..

Let’s Fly! Bloghop

Morning and welcome to Calgary, Canada! It’s a very snowy day here and my take on the theme is much more with hopes of spring around a corner….

This bloghop features over 50 international designers. We start wilth Gill Eggleson of Pattern Addict Textile and Surface Pattern Design in France, click here to start at the beginning.

I have been blessed to be a part of an inspirational and highly talented group of designers. We thought we’d kick off the new year with a “grand tour” of our designs featuring the colour of the year. Emerald. Personally I’m a jewel toned kinda gal, so I was pleased with this years choice. Yet mixing it with my drawing and design style wasn’t without it’s challenges. Please leave me your thoughts in the comments below. I’d love to hear if you thought I missed the mark, or not.

If you have started in France and worked your way through the hop you’ve just came from the UK, where Sally Garner is located than you’ve just come from her studio: Sarah Paris Style I love her blog!

Please take a look around my designs you’ll see it’s mostly SPD these days and will likely continue to be heavily featured here, though I do have the heart of a painter/printmaker, so you might notice a few other things from time to time. I hope to see you visiting again.

Now you are off to Rhode Island, US to see how Groovity Designs by Mary Tanana flys!

ps. Mary’s designs are gorgeous!
